Frequently asked questions about Jobcenter/moving costs

To ensure everything works out regarding cost coverage with the Jobcenter, you should observe the following steps. First, it is important that you get the move approved by the Jobcenter in writing. Then you can start looking for a new apartment. Be sure to present the rental offer to the Jobcenter and wait until it is approved. Once you have the approval from the Jobcenter, you can sign the rental agreement. Remember to submit a copy of the signed rental agreement to the Jobcenter. Now you can apply for the moving costs to be covered by the Jobcenter.

For a self-organized move, the Jobcenter covers part of the moving costs under certain conditions. A professional move with a moving company is only paid for by the Jobcenter if you prove with a certificate that you are too old, sick or otherwise physically limited to organize and carry out the move yourself. If you submit such a medical certificate, it is your task to obtain three cost estimates from moving companies. From these three offers, usually the most cost-effective one is selected and then these moving costs are covered by the Jobcenter.

If you have received approval and the Jobcenter pays for part of your moving costs, you must commit to planning the move as inexpensively as possible. Costs that the Jobcenter can cover for you include, for example, costs for packing materials such as boxes, foil, wardrobe boxes and more, or costs for renting a moving truck. Furthermore, the Jobcenter may under certain circumstances pay for the costs of placing apartment advertisements or for daily newspapers that contain a housing market section. Housing acquisition costs are also among the moving costs that the Jobcenter compensates. This means that if you have to stay overnight at the new place of residence during your apartment search because a round trip in one day is demonstrably not possible, the accommodation costs will be covered. Cost coverage is also possible for bulky waste fees, expenses for food for your private moving helpers, materials for a renovation specified in the rental agreement, the mail forwarding request as well as for the connection and re-registration of the telephone or internet.

Finding a suitable apartment in today’s world is not always easy, especially when it needs to happen quickly. Under certain circumstances, you might find the right apartment through a broker. It is at the discretion of your responsible case worker whether broker fees are covered. However, you must prove that you cannot find an apartment without a broker. Therefore, clarify this question in advance with your case worker to be on the safe side.

In addition to possible broker fees, the Jobcenter can also cover the rental deposit, as this is part of the housing acquisition costs. However, in this case, an interest-free loan is usually granted, which you must repay later. Even if you have to pay double rent for the old and new apartment, the Jobcenter can cover this. In this case, you must also prove that the double rent could not be avoided.

If you do not have necessary furniture such as a bed, a closet, shelves, a desk or the dining table and chairs, or if your old furniture is unusable, the Jobcenter will cover this in this case. You will also receive a subsidy from the Jobcenter for other necessary items such as cutlery, bedding, plates, trash cans or curtains. This subsidy can be in cash as well as in the form of a voucher for shopping in a social department store. Which costs are covered and whether you are allowed to buy new or used furniture or other items must be discussed in advance with the responsible case worker. If you are moving into your own apartment for the first time, you also have the right to an initial equipment.
